Non Standard Time

October 31st, 2015 by Ken

Tonight, after the Trick or Treaters have left and before you go to bed – – turn your clocks back an hour.   It’s time to return to Standard Time.

It actually isn’t Standard Time anymore – – it’s become Non Standard Time.   Daylight Savings Time now last eight months – – while the so called – Standard Time only lasts four months.   So I think its time to change its name to Non-Standard Time.

I really detest having to mess with my clocks twice a year.   I have six clocks and four watches.   In addition I have kitchen gadgets like the stove, the microwave and the coffee maker which also have to be readjusted.   Thanks goodness the phones, the televisions and the computers do it automatically – – I think.

Most of us here in the Northwest like Daylight Savings Time.   We get those long summer nights when the sun doesn’t set until nearly 10 p.m. and it rises long before most of us are up.  This time a year, we go to work in the dark and come home in the dark.   That extra hour of daylight taken away from us at the end of the day really matters.

We messed with Mother Nature’s time beginning with World War One to give factory workers more hours of daylight in which to produce war munitions.  It also used less energy in the form of lighting.   We went back to standard time but re-instituted it again during World War Two.

We kept Daylight Savings Time which started the first Sunday of April and lasted until the first Sunday in October.   But when the energy crisis hit in the 1970’s – – we moved Daylight Savings Time to the first Sunday in March and ending with the first Sunday in November.

Farmers like Standard Time because it gets lighter a little earlier in the morning.   And parents like it because the kids don’t have to wait for the school bus in the dark for too long of a period.   Everybody else hates it.

Lets get rid of Non Standard Time and make Daylight Savings Time permanent.

Oh – don’t forget to change the batteries in your smoke detectors – if you can remember what type of batteries they use.
