Council supports levy
On a 5-1 vote, Lacey’s City Council passed a resolution Thursday, supporting the upcoming North Thurston Public School’s maintenance and operations levy. The levy will raise nearly $18 million dollars and cost about $2.18 per thousand of assessed valuation.
A similar levy on the ballot in February failed with only 48 percent of the voters giving approval.
Despite a plea from me, to avoid taking a stand on a ballot measure, all members of the Lacey Council, with the exception of Ann Burgman, voted to pass the resoluton. Mary Dean was absent. There was no discussion or debate.
Failure of the levy will mean cutbacks in the school’s operations and as many as 180 people could be let go, including about 80 teachers. The vote will be on May 20.
