What next for city/fire district?
With no opposition and unanimous support from all affected, the annexation of the City of Lacey into Fire District 3, garnered near unanimous support with more than 85 percent of the voters in favor.
What’s next?
The three Lacey Fire District officials have pledged to put on the August ballot, a measure to increase the number of fire commissioners from 3 to 5.
Until then, under a memorandum of understanding between the city and the fire district, the City of Lacey will appoint two representatives to sit on the fire commission. They will be allowed to participate in discussion but will have NO vote.
If the voters approve expansion of the fire commissioners, the current fire commissioners will appoint two people to fill the newly created vacant positions. It’s not certain if they have to appoint the two members representing the city. Whomever they appoint will draw lots. One will have to run for the seat in 2011 and the other in 2013.
Lacey Mayor Tom Nelson and members of the Lacey City Council will soon call for those interested in the appointed position to apply. Information on how to apply will soon be up on the City of Lacey’s web page.
